All,
As you may have noticed, Paratopia.net was suspended for a short time last week. This was due to an overwhelming number of downloads and bandwidth usage. iPage, our dedicated servers for the weekly show and our extensive archives – while billing themselves as “unlimited bandwidth and storage space” – still have limits. Our draws on their servers lately, “have load disrupted thousands of other websites” in the process of keeping up with our demand for space and bandwidth.
They have given us an ultimatum: remove all archive shows except for the past 10, or your site will not be unlocked from suspension. That means you guys and gals who subscribe will not have access to the full back catalog past the last 10. Nothing for the time being that we can do about that (although I’ll be working at a solution), and no episodes past the last 10 will be available for single purchase.
We will keep a list on site of the full back episodes we’ve done. There won’t be any way to listen to them for the time being.
iPage has suggested their sister company to meet our needs. They’re FAR in access of cost than what the show brings in. It’s just not an option. Right now, access to the past 10 episodes is the best we can do. We are currently archiving all the back full shows, and then they will be taken off the server so we can get back up and running. We will search for an outlet to house them so subscribers can once again get the full archive access. We may discontinue single purchase episodes past the last 10, as it may not be feasible to do anything of a single purchase nature being that the archive is housed off site.
Please know I’m going to do whatever I can to get these episodes back up – but for now, the only ones we can have available are the current, and last 10 back from there. Simply put, we have outgrown the podcast medium.
We will not barrage you folks with pleas for money. We will not litter our website with endless banner ads. We will not have commercials every 5 minutes of the show. We absolutely refuse to raise subscription or single episode costs.
So for now, this is how it is. But I am working on some solution to get those old episodes available again. Maybe we do away with single episode purchases (past the last 10), and just make those past the 10 mark available for subscribers. I don’t know the solution right now.
I hope you all understand. It’s certainly not the way I want it, but right now it’s our only option or we have nothing. As soon as we figure anything out, you’ll know about it.
Jeff
